THE DARK SIDE

In this sacred space, sanity often hangs by a delicate thread. In that dim studio corner, the artist’s once cherished chair becomes a silent sentinel, marking the site of internal battles. Here, in the quiet chaos reminiscent of Van Gogh’s own torments, the artist faces the relentless inquisition of their worth, questioning their identity with every fleeting moment: Is my art a true reflection of my essence? The exhibition aims to bridge the gap between the artist’s secluded atelier and the broader world, illuminating the enigmatic beauty that thrives in the shadows.

Mres RCA 2024 Research Journeys

The MRes RCA is interdisciplinary: students from the fields of architecture, communication, design, fine art and the experimental humanities come together in a single programme to think about their practice as transforming, and as being transformed by, work in other disciplines. Students come to us to pursue a project of their choosing. Assured in their practices as artists, for example (or as writers, curators, architects, product designers, visual communicators – and the list goes on), students come to develop their knowledge on a topic that feels vital to them, which they filter through their practice. They come to us as practitioners. Drawing on methods from across disciplines, we teach them how to become researchers, too.

Fragment for the Future; Movement

Fragments for the Future includes works by MRes students across the discipline specialisms of Architecture, Communication, Design, Fine Art, and Experimental Humanities. This two-part exhibition is divided by a structure of stillness and movement, with the first installation being one of objects displayed primarily on the floor and leant against walls and the second installation focusing on time-based works including moving image and live works. Each show creates cascades of folds or sequences of affects; subjects and objects tangled together.

Both shows (exposures) have an engagement with the fragment, on the level of practice as well as within a constellation of concepts. Themes such as displacement, fracture, mis-recognition, fetishism, splitting, incompletion, desire, and formlessness, establish circuits and networks of becoming across visual and textual interfaces.

Whispers of the unseen: Sonic Alchemy

Curated and performed by students from the Royal College of Art Sound Elective these events are an odyssey through and beyond the audible. The shows will include DIY instruments, 3D spatialisation, AI-generated AV work, electroacoustic sea shanties and a sonic meal. Each project is an exploration of the unseen, an invitation to journey through sound as a form of experiential resonance. Sonic Alchemy is a celebration of sound's potential as a connective and disruptive medium.
